Going to Europe? Then chances are you’ll first need a Schengen visa, want to opt for some quality Schengen travel insurance — or both. Fortunately, we here at AXA have been a leading provider of top-quality Schengen travel insurance coverage for millions of travelers worldwide for years.
In fact, when it comes to keeping you and your family safe, catering to your individual needs, and providing the best possible value for any given budget — no one does it better. But don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself by exploring the various plan cost options we have to offer below!
What is Schengen visa travel insurance (and why do I need it)?
Schengen travel insurance is specifically designed for travelers visiting one, any, or all of Europe’s Schengen countries. It’s also mandatory for anyone who needs a Schengen visa to do so.
Moreover, the Schengen travel insurance requirements to be granted that visa stipulate that your plan:
- be purchased from an insurance company validated by the consular authorities of all Schengen countries;
- have the minimum required Schengen travel insurance coverage of €30,000 in medical expenses (such as hospitalization, emergency treatment, and repatriation, including in case of death);
- cover you in all Schengen member countries;
- be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen Area;
AXA’s plans, of course, meet all the requirements above. But we’ll get to that.
PRO-TIP: Meanwhile, AXA can also tell you everything else you need to know about the documents required to apply for a Schengen Visa.
And if I don’t need a Schengen visa for Europe?
Well, visa or no visa, having the right Schengen travel insurance coverage is never a bad idea. First off, because traveling abroad always comes with a few surprises. And having travel health insurance — no matter the destination — is the first major step in ensuring your and your family’s well-being.
Moreover, one of the many benefits of AXA’s Schengen travel insurance plans is that they cover you not just in one European country — but, rather, throughout all the countries within the Schengen Zone (and sometimes beyond — but more on that below too).
So even if you don’t need a visa, Schengen travel insurance is still a great call for almost any European trip.
And yet another benefit of AXA that you simply can’t beat with other travel insurance plans? Well, the most bang for your buck, of course.
So without further ado — here’s a cost breakdown of the three plans we have to offer you and yours.
How much does AXA’s Low-Cost insurance cost?
Our first plan — i.e., AXA’s Low-Cost travel insurance option — starts at as little as €5 a day. And along with the peace of mind and security it brings, it also:
- offers medical expenses of up to €30,000 and coverage in case of repatriation;
- meets all the requirements for being granted a Schengen visa;
- covers you in all the countries within the Schengen Zone + the European microstates of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City;
- and is valid for trips of up to 180 consecutive days.*
*MONEY-SAVING PRO-TIP: And not only is “Low-Cost” our most affordable option, but the minimum €5/day rate actually starts to decrease — and quite drastically — with the more days you choose! For example:
- Four-day coverage will cost you around €4.75/day;
- Planning a two-week European getaway? Great! You’ll only be paying €2.85/day;
- Going to Europe for a month? You’ll pay less than half the original daily rate (i.e., roughly €2day) for the same benefits!;
- And hoping to take advantage of the full 180-day Schengen visa allowance? We’ll cover your entire trip for a little over €1/day (or €1.05/day, to be exact)!
In other words, AXA’s Low-Cost is the way to go if you’re looking for the most basic coverage, are traveling on a tighter budget — or both.
And the longer you plan to stay in Europe, the lower the cost!
How much does AXA’s Europe Travel insurance cost?
AXA’s Europe Travel insurance option starts at €9/day. And it, in turn:
- offers medical expenses of up to €100,000 and coverage in case of repatriation;
- provides additional benefits like coverage for the loss of documents (and/or important items) and more serious issues — such as search and rescue, emergency communications, and more;
- meets all the requirements for being granted a Schengen visa; -covers you in all the countries within the Schengen Zone + the European Union + the European microstates of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City + the U.K.;
- is valid for up to 180 consecutive days.*
*MONEY-SAVING PRO-TIP: Moreover, just like our “Low-Cost” option, with “Europe Travel”, your rate also decreases the more days you choose to be covered. For example:
- To cover four days total, you’re looking at only €4.9/day;
- Two weeks in Europe? We’ll cover you for roughly €4.35/day;
- One month in the Schengen will run you around €3.2/day;
- And a full half-a-year abroad? Just like with “Low-Cost,” you’re looking at a mere €1.05/day — and that’s with all the benefits mentioned above, 24/7!
“Europe Travel” is the coverage for you if you’re planning a slightly more adventurous getaway and/or traveling with the family.
Furthermore, with “Europe Travel,” you get to explore European countries outside of the Schengen zone. And it’s ideal for anyone planning a longer stay too (for example, if you’re applying for a long-stay Schengen visa). Moreover, the longer your stay in and/or travels through Europe are, the cheaper it gets!
How much does AXA’s Multi-Trip insurance cost?
And, finally, Multi-Trip — our most extensive coverage — costs €328/year.
It offers all the same benefits as “Europe Travel” and is valid for trips of up to 90 consecutive days* — and that’s for up to a whole year starting from the day you subscribe!
*NOTE: Once the 90-day maximum Schengen visa period ends, you’ll have to leave the Schengen area; however, your coverage will be reactivated as soon as you return.
So “Multi-trip” is your best choice if you plan to travel to and/or throughout Europe regularly. Because even though its rate stays fixed, you won’t need to get a new plan each time you travel to the Schengen! And at less than a Euro a day, it’s the perfect way to save on Schengen travel health insurance long-term!

FAQ
Can I purchase Schengen travel health insurance for someone else?
Yes! AXA allows you to take out a travel insurance plan for guests and/or loved ones visiting you in Europe. You’ll just be asked to provide your visitor’s name, DOB, address, passport number, and itinerary — and they’re good to go!
Do I need to declare any pre-existing conditions when taking out Schengen travel insurance?
Yes. During the quote process, you’ll be asked a few quick (and confidential) questions — which will enable AXA to make an offer covering the conditions declared (IMPORTANT NOTE: Claims relating to undeclared conditions will not be covered).
Can I get my Schengen Visa online too?
No. While Schengen travel insurance can be easily purchased online, for the Schengen visa itself you’ll still need to attend an in-person interview. However, the EU does plan to bring the Schengen visa application process online at some point too.
