With its incredible fjords - a true wonder of nature that creates a unique coastline - Norway is a country of immense natural beauty. Glaciers, grand and glorious, snake down from ice fields that rank among Europe's largest - making Norway a winter wonderland throughout much of the year. Its Arctic areas offer majestic vistas and its forests and mountains a superb, stunning backdrop to those who want to try winter sports or explore one of Europe’s true wildernesses - where you can try snowmobiling, skiing, hiking, dog-sledding, and white-water rafting. Plus, if you travel to Norway at the right time of year you might even see the Northern Lights.
Norway isn’t just for the adventurous, however, as its fast-growing capital, Oslo, is very much a bustling Scandinavian metropolis with a rich cultural history - with important local figures including the artist Edvard Munch and writer Henrik Ibsen. The most famous version of Munch’s signature work, The Scream, is housed in Oslo in Norway’s National Museum.
Although Norway is not in the European Union it is part of the Schengen Area of borderless travel. AXA’s Schengen travel insurance offers extensive protection for those traveling to Norway - as it can cover medical expenses up to €100,000 in Norway and other Schengen Area countries. It also allows you to obtain the travel insurance certificate required with your visa application.

Do you cover emergency medical costs related to coronavirus?
We will cover your medical costs related to coronavirus provided you haven't traveled against World Health Organization advice, personal medical advice from your doctor, or any other government body’s advice in your home country or the country you are traveling to. Emergency and additional travel costs are also covered providing you have stuck to this advice.
All issued electronic certificates purchased on the axa-schengen site include this disclaimer: “Medical fees related to COVID-19 are covered in the terms, conditions & exclusions established in the insurance policy”. This will satisfy any embassy rules that state you must get an insurance certificate with Covid protection.

What should I know when preparing for my trip to Norway?
Security: Crime levels are low, but as in any country, there’s a risk of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations and in busy tourist areas in Oslo. Take sensible precautions to protect your belongings - such as storing them in a safe place when not needed on your person and not brandishing them around in public. One should remain alert when walking home alone at night, and stick to main roads and well-lit areas. Be aware that it can get very cold in Norway at certain times of year.
Opening hours: The working day generally lasts from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, from Monday to Friday. A 30-minute lunch is taken, usually between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Shops in busier areas will often open later.
Public transport: Norway’s transportation network is extensive and efficient. Journeys by train can be long - but beautiful and comfortable as you can watch the world go by and rest on a sleeper train on longer routes. Services connect the major cities like Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim. Buses in Norway are cheaper than trains and will be your main mode of public transport in more rural areas. The bus network is efficient, but there are far fewer services on weekends and outside of the summer high season. Oslo boasts a metro network while Bergen prides itself on an excellent public transport system including light rail (trams).
Driving license: Visitors can drive in Norway using a valid license from EU or EEA countries and many other major nations - without the need for an International Driving Permit.
Restaurants: Many restaurants open from noon to 3pm, and 6pm to 11pm. Some restaurants, particularly those in busy tourist areas, will open all day and don't close between lunch and dinner.
Visa: Although many countries have visa-free travel with Norway and the Schengen Area, if you think you do need a visa to Norway you can find out more, here.
Will my travel insurance cover repatriation if I get injured?
Yes. AXA’s insurance will cover your repatriation in case of injury or illness- if necessary and within the limits of expenses.
Will my travel insurance fees be refunded if my visa is refused?
Yes. If your visa is refused AXA will refund your insurance fees - but you will need to provide documentation specifying the reason for refusal - subject to conditions.
Will my insurance cover me for multiple trips to Norway?
This will depend on the type of insurance you buy - our low cost or Europe Travel insurance will cover you for trips within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days. If you are planning multiple trips over the course of a year you may - however - be better off with our annual Multi Trip policy.
