Do I need a visa and travel insurance for Europe?
Chile is among the countries with which the Schengen area has reached a series of parallel agreements to allow its citizens to travel across its territory without any special permission. This means that Chileans can visit the 27 countries that make up the Schengen area without a visa and without having to purchase medical travel insurance in advance, as long as they do not stay there for more than 90 days.
For stays longer than three months, a long-term visa must be obtained, which is processed through the country where one plans to study, work, or settle.
Important information: It is expected that at some unspecified time in 2023, it will become mandatory to go through the process of obtaining an electronic travel authorization known as ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). This new measure has been implemented to automate the control of Europe’s external borders and strengthen its security. The price for ETIAS will be 7 euros, and minors under 18 years of age will be exempt from payment. Once the application has been processed, it will be completed within a maximum of 72 hours, and the response will be sent via email.

When will I need a visa or insurance to travel to Europe from Chile?
Only individuals residing in Chile who do not hold a national passport will need to find out whether they need to process any type of visa to enter the Schengen area, depending on whether their country of origin enjoys a visa exemption.
If they are required to have a Schengen visa, they will also need to purchase the medical travel insurance that must be submitted along with the duly completed application form and a series of documents listed below.
What do I need to apply for a Schengen visa?
The official application form.
Two passport-sized photos.
A valid and current passport, issued within the last ten years and not expiring within six months after the date the holder is expected to leave the Schengen area.
A round-trip ticket, demonstrating the traveler's intention to leave the Schengen area and return to Chile before the 90 days authorized by the visa have elapsed.
Proof of accommodation for the entire duration of the stay, such as a hotel reservation or an AirBnB. If the accommodation is provided by a family member or friend, a letter of invitation may be required by authorities at border controls.
Justification for the reasons for the visit to Europe.
Demonstration of sufficient financial means to cover the total duration of the stay, such as a bank statement. The minimum amount varies from country to country.
Proof that medical travel insurance has been purchased, valid throughout the Schengen area.
What guarantees should my travel insurance for Europe provide?
When purchasing the necessary travel insurance for a Schengen visa, make sure it meets two basic conditions: it must be accepted in all 27 countries of this European territory, and it must cover repatriation in case of accident or illness and medical expenses for possible emergencies for a minimum value of 30,000 euros.
