Travel insurance is compulsory to obtain a Schengen visa
Subscribing to travel insurance is one of the compulsory requirements to obtain a Schengen visa which will allow you to enter, travel and stay in the Schengen area. Without proper travel insurance, your Schengen visa application will be denied.
However, while mandatory, travel insurance is not included with the visa and is not delivered by the authorities in charge of granting Schengen visas. It is your responsibility to subscribe with a private insurance company. Make sure the travel insurance you choose meets the requirements defined by Schengen authorities in order to accept your visa application.
Schengen travel insurance must meet several criteria to be accepted
Article 15 of the Schengen visa Code, defines the criteria which compulsory Schengen travel insurance must meet:
- It must cover all expenses concerning emergency medical care, hospitalisation as well as expenses entailed in case of death.
- It must provide coverage for the Insured’s sanitary repatriation.
- Coverage must be minimum €30,000.
- It must be valid for the entire duration of your stay.
- It must be valid in all Schengen member States (not just the ones you plan to visit).
- It must be purchased from an insurance company validated by the consular authorities of all Schengen countries.
Many different travel insurance offers exist. Before subscribing, make sure to check it meets all the Schengen requirements.
When should you buy your Schengen visa insurance?
Your Schengen travel insurance certificate must be enclosed with your visa application. Consequently, your subscription must be done prior to your visa application.
Do not mistake date of subscription and validity period!
When you subscribe to travel insurance, you will indicate your entry and exit dates from the Schengen area. Therefore, even if you subscribe to Schengen travel insurance weeks before your scheduled travel dates, you will only pay for the actual duration of your stay within the Schengen territory.
How to obtain your visa travel insurance certificate quickly?
When you subscribe to Schengen travel insurance, the insurance provider must provide an insurance certificate. When you subscribe online, you will receive it automatically by email. If you choose to subscribe in an agency, it will be handed to you directly.

What are the three Schengen visa insurance plans?
1. The Schengen Low Cost option
It is the simplest yet efficient option. Its coverage meets all the minimum criteria to obtain a Schengen visa at a very affordable price.
- It protects you during the entire length of your stay (up to 180 consecutive days).
- You are covered in all the countries of the Schengen Area + the 4 European micro-States (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican).
- Your medical expenses, emergency hospitalization, sanitary repatriation and expenses in the event of death are covered for up to €30,000.
- The cost of insurance is calculated per range, according to the number of days covered.
2 The Schengen Europe Travel option
An extensive offer compared to the Low Cost option. Its cost is also calculated per range, depending on the numbers of days of the trip:
- The zone covered is extended to all countries of the Schengen area and the European Union + the 4 European micro-States as well as the United Kingdom;
- Expenses are covered up to €100, 000.
- Coverage includes search and rescue costs up to €5, 000.
- It also covers the repatriation costs of the other insured people travelling with the hospitalised or ill traveller.
- In case of hospitalization, it offers assistance for the Insured if they are travelling alone, the payment of the costs entailed by the extension of their stay, a daily compensation for some expenses as well as accommodation for the person travelling with the Insured and/or their children.
- If the Insured is not able to take care of their underage children (aged under 18), it covers the costs of the return trip of a person chosen by the family to collect the children and bring them back to their home country.
- In case of death, it covers the costs of the anticipated repatriation of the other insured parties and their luggage.
- It also includes several other additional services such as the transmission of urgent messages, coverage of communication expenses, theft of identity or travel documents, anticipated return trip in case of emergency, delivery of forgotten items necessary for the Insured to continue their stay such as medication, glasses or prosthesis.
This offer is identical to the Europe Travel option when it comes to coverage and services but it is available as a yearly subscription and not based on the duration of your stay.
This plan is ideal for frequent travelers and it allows holders of a Schengen multiple-entry visa who travel regularly to the Schengen countries during the year, to enjoy continuous coverage during their trips as soon as they enter the European zone. As a result, they don’t have to worry about subscribing to new travel insurance every time they go on a trip.
