Students from countries that require a visa to cross the borders of the Schengen area will only need to apply for a short-term visa for training periods of less than 90 days in Spain. Other students can circulate freely during that same period of time as long as they enter the country legally and reside in a Schengen state or one of the countries that have established parallel agreements with the Schengen area to allow their citizens to enter their territory without the need for a visa.
In the case that the stay exceeds three months, it will be necessary for anyone – regardless of the passport they hold – to obtain a special student visa that will allow them to undertake academic studies and participate in research and/or training activities, exchange programs, internships, or volunteering.
What documents do I need to get a student visa for Spain?
The requirements to be considered and the documentation to be submitted with the student visa application for Spain are as follows:
- The application form in duplicate, available for download on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
- A recent color passport-sized photo.
- A valid passport with a minimum validity covering the entire duration of the stay.
- Documentation proving that you have medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros.
- Proof that you have sufficient financial means to cover the trip until the visa expires and to show the intention to leave the Schengen area before that date, for example, with a return ticket. If the stay is sponsored by a family member or a third party, the documents must be notarized, i.e., duly verified, and a proof of relationship must be included.
- Reservation of a round-trip ticket and proof of accommodation for the entire duration of the stay. If it is covered by a friend or family member, an invitation letter must also be provided.
- Enrollment or admission documentation from a teaching institution specifying the content of the curriculum or training courses to be undertaken.
- Documentation proving the qualifications previously obtained or the completion of courses or other training related to the subject to be studied in Spain.
For students planning to stay in Spain for more than six months, it will also be necessary to present a medical certificate stating that they do not suffer from any diseases that pose a risk to public health and a criminal background check.
This type of student visa for Spain only allows internships, i.e., part-time jobs, which are not always paid.
