How to apply for a visa for Spain from Argentina?

Spain is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations worldwide for tourists. Those planning a holiday in Europe won't want to miss the opportunity to relax on its famous beaches, savor the local cuisine, and enjoy its wide cultural offerings.

The big question many Argentinians ask before packing their bags is whether they need a visa for Spain. The answer is no, as Spain is part of the Schengen Area, and has established agreements whereby citizens from certain countries, including Argentina, do not require a Schengen visa to move within this territory.

Practically speaking, the Schengen Area is a region in Europe where all people who have legally entered through an external border or legally reside in one of the countries within the area can move freely.

Those living in Argentina but not holding an Argentine passport can check whether they are exempt from the obligation of presenting a visa at the following link:

In specific cases where Argentinians need to obtain a Schengen visa to travel to Spain, they can find information about all the necessary documents for doing so on the website of the Spanish Embassy in Buenos Aires or the Spanish Consulate General in Buenos Aires.

When do I need to apply for a visa to travel to Spain from Argentina?

As mentioned earlier, Argentine citizens do not need to apply for a visa to travel to Spain or any other country in the Schengen Area, as long as their stay does not exceed three months. This means they can freely move through Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

However, starting from 2022, they will need to obtain an ETIAS visa for Spain through a very simple online procedure.

Anyone planning to extend their stay for more than 3 months will need to obtain the corresponding permit. Depending on the nature of the visit, they may apply for one of the following three types of visas: tourist or private, professional, or study or other training-related visas. Information on these visas and who can apply for them is summarized in the following link: exteriores.gob.es/Embajadas/BUENOSAIRES/es/InformacionParaExtranjeros/Paginas/VisadosDeLargaDuracion.aspx

What are the requirements for traveling to Spain from Argentina?

Argentine citizens wishing to enter Spain must have a valid passport that is valid for at least three months after the date they are expected to leave the country and that was issued within the last ten years. Minors traveling alone or accompanied by one of their parents must also present a parental permission or a permission from their legal guardians along with their national identity document.

For stays shorter than three months, the following documents are required:

  • A valid passport.
  • A round-trip ticket.
  • Proof of the purpose of the trip and the conditions of the visit: for leisure or private travel, a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from an individual will suffice.
  • Proof that sufficient financial means are available to cover the entire stay.

Exceptionally, medical certificates required by the relevant authorities may also be requested.

A visa for long stays must be requested in person at a Spanish Diplomatic Mission or Consular Office with a completed application form (original and copy), available for download on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or at any consular office.

When submitting the application, the established fee must also be paid, which will not be refunded if the application is denied.

Can I visit other Schengen countries with my visa?

Yes. Foreign citizens with a valid stay permit or a long-term visa issued by a Schengen state can move freely for up to 90 days within any 180-day period throughout the rest of the Schengen Area countries. This regulation applies to Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

On the other hand, visas issued by European Union countries that are not part of the Schengen Area—such as Ireland, Cyprus, Romania, and Bulgaria—or the United Kingdom, for example, are only valid for those specific countries.

Do I need health insurance to obtain a Spanish visa as an Argentine?

Argentinians traveling to Spain for less than three months are not required to have travel medical insurance, which is mandatory for obtaining the Schengen visa required for citizens of other countries. However, it is highly recommended to have one, as any kind of medical or other emergency can result in considerable expenses.
