Visa for Spain from Chile

These are the main requirements for entering Spain from Chile.

Visa for Spain from Chile

One of the most important things to consider when preparing a trip like this is whether you need a visa for Spain from Chile. To understand this, you need to know that Spain belongs to the Schengen Area. The Schengen Area is a group of 27 countries that have signed an agreement to eliminate their internal borders, thus promoting the free movement of people, goods, and capital among member states. Well, it is important to know this because these 27 countries share a common visa policy. For entering this area, certain travelers will need a Schengen visa.

At AXA, we would like to remind you that not all European countries belong to the Schengen Area.

Who needs a Schengen visa?

The countries in the Schengen Area have reached an agreement on visa exemption with several countries around the world. And yes, Chile is one of them. Citizens of Chile, Mexico, the United States, Argentina, Uruguay (among many others) do not need a Schengen visa to go to Spain. This applies for short tourist stays (less than 90 days within a 180-day period). If you wish to stay more than 90 days in Spain (or the Schengen Area) or want to work in a Schengen member country, you will need to apply for a specific visa.

The short-term Schengen visa is called a Schengen type C visa.

On the other hand, there are countries that do need a visa to enter the Schengen Area.

ETIAS

However, at AXA Schengen, we find it important to mention that starting in 2025, citizens of countries exempt from the visa requirement to travel to Europe will have to apply for an electronic travel authorization called ETIAS. This authorization is designed to speed up entry to Europe and enhance security on the continent.

Mandatory requirements

These are the requirements you will need to meet to enter Spain from Chile:

  • Valid biometric passport (expiration date must be at least 3 months beyond the date you plan to leave Europe).
  • Confirmed accommodation. You must be able to prove this (a hotel or tourist apartment reservation in your name, an invitation letter from a family member or friend...)
  • Travel medical insurance
  • Round-trip ticket.
  • Proof of financial means. In 2023, the minimum required amount is 108 euros per person per day. In any case, regardless of the number of days, a minimum of 972 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency will be required.

Travel medical insurance

Any citizen of a country that requires a Schengen visa will be obligated to purchase travel insurance to Europe.

Although Chilean citizens are not required to have travel medical insurance to enter Spain, it is essential to know that Chile does not have a health agreement with Spain, so any treatment you may need in Europe could incur astronomical costs that you will have to pay for out of pocket. No one is safe from falling off a scooter in the streets of Madrid or Seville, suffering a theft on the Barcelona metro, or having an accident while surfing in the Cantabrian Sea.

Additionally, in case of needing repatriation, if they do not have travel insurance, Chilean tourists will not be covered. And needless to say, repatriation expenses are considerable. AXA's Schengen visa insurance not only meets all the requirements set by the Schengen authorities, but also:

  • Has no age limit
  • Requires no medical exam
  • Can be purchased online from anywhere in the world
  • The policy is immediately available, which can speed up the visa application process (in case you need one).

And, most importantly, we adapt to each traveler's way of traveling and budget. Therefore, we offer three types of insurance with different coverage and prices. Below is a breakdown of the three options.

You can compare the guarantees of our 3 products to find the one that best suits you and your needs.

At AXA Schengen, we hope this article has helped you understand whether you need a visa for Spain from Chile.

What should I do in case of a medical emergency in Europe?

AXA policies include a 24-hour emergency assistance service - available seven days a week - that will connect you with local experts who will guide you step by step to resolve any situation and direct you to the nearest medical center.
Additionally, the emergency number in Europe is 112.

How much does the ETIAS cost to travel to Spain from Chile?

This authorization is not yet active but will be in 2025. What we can tell you is that the ETIAS travel authorization costs 7€ per person.

I am a Chilean citizen, how can I settle in Spain?

If you are from Chile and wish to emigrate to Spain, you can do so by applying for a student, volunteer, or work visa. Whether self-employed or employed by others. On the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, you can find information on the different types of visas to go to Spain.
