Why can't Egyptians simply enter Germany?

From the EU's perspective, Egypt is a third country. Since Egypt does not have a visa liberalization agreement with the European Union, all travelers with Egyptian citizenship must apply for a visa before entering Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (as well as the entire Schengen area and the EU). The visa is called a Schengen visa because it allows you to move freely within all Schengen countries. Entry for Egyptians to Germany or the Schengen area will be denied at border control without a valid visa. In our  country list for Schengen visas you can see which countries, besides Egypt, are also required to apply for a visa to enter Germany.

Good to know: When entering Germany from Egypt, you need a visa, even if you wish to apply for a residence permit in Germany and want to reside there!

Which visa should Egyptians apply for?

Before entering Germany from Egypt, you first need to consider how long you plan to stay in Germany and for what purpose. Are you traveling to Germany to visit family and relatives, or do you want to apply for a residence permit and stay in Germany long-term? Depending on the purpose and duration of your stay, you need to apply for the correct visa.

1. Short-term visas: Visa for Egyptians to Germany for up to 3 months

If you are not traveling to Germany for more than 90 days, you should apply for a short-term visa (the so-called Schengen Visa C). With the C visa, you are not allowed to take up work, and this type of visa can only be extended in emergencies.

The short-term visa is suitable for the following travel purposes:

  • as a visitor visa for Egyptians visiting family and friends in Germany
  • as a business visa for Egyptians for business trips to Germany
  • as a tourist visa for Egyptians traveling for tourism in Germany
  • for attending cultural and sporting events
  • for travel for medical reasons
  • for short-term studies and research purposes
  • for transit

2. Long-term visas: Visa for Egyptians to Germany for up to 6 months

If you want to stay in Germany for more than 3 months or plan to take up work, you must apply for a long-term visa (a Schengen Visa D, also known as a national visa) that can be extended on site. It is primarily aimed at people who wish to study, work, or reside permanently in Germany. With a D visa, you can also visit other Schengen countries, just like with a C visa, provided you do not stay there for more than 90 days.

The long-term visa is suitable for the following purposes:

  • Marriage visa: You want to marry a German national as an Egyptian
  • Work visa: You are planning to take up work (this also includes internships and au pair activities)
  • Student visa: You wish to take a language course, study, or engage in scientific activities that last longer than 3 months
  • Training visa: You plan to undergo vocational training in Germany

Be aware of the processing times for your visa application! In contrast to the national D visa, applying for a short Schengen Visa C is less bureaucratic and is usually issued within 15 days. For a D visa, the approval of the foreign authority is necessary. Therefore, the visa process can take up to two months, and sometimes even longer if additional authorities, such as the Federal Employment Agency, are involved.

Good to know: The Visa Navigator of the German Federal Foreign Office also provides assistance in choosing the visa.

What do Egyptians need for the visa application?

For your visa from Egypt to Germany, you need to fill out the application form for the visa and attach various documents. You can fill out the application form for Schengen Visa C directly via the VIDEX platform. You can find application forms for national visas in many languages on the German Federal Government's website. For your Egypt Germany visa, you must credibly present the reason for your trip and the conditions under which you are traveling.

Checklist for the visa application:

  • Completed, signed, and printed visa application
  • Valid passport
  • Two recent biometric passport photos

  • If applicable, invitation letter for visiting relatives or acquaintances
  • Proof of financial means (e.g. salary statements, bank statements, etc.)
  • If necessary, proof of health insurance (min. 30,000 € coverage)
